I was away over the time of the Asia Cup final and only found out today, while browsing around the BBC sport website, that Iraq won the Asia Cup.
Is this encouraging?
1. Because of the obvious problems that we all know about in Iraq
and
2. Because another Asian team is emerging out of the continent to contest at the biggest stage of football (in recent years we have seen Japan, South Korea, Iran, Saudi Arabia and China develop)
However, like many of the countries listed above, will Iraq suffer a downslide, like Saudi Arabia did after France ‘98, Iran and China in Japan and Korea and South Korea after Germany last year. And is this even more probable after the title winning manager, Jorvan Vieira, stepped down after the victory?
(I expect only proper football fans will answer this question properly!)

Maybe they’ll beat England in the next World Cup.
Whatever nation they may be , but they played good football throughout the cup and i can say that they wont finish last in there group next world cup…….

1 – u don’t know anything about Iraq . as country. as history. as this great Civilizations was there before Britain be (GREAT) by Occupations other nations with them Countries.
2 – Iraq have several wars since 1980 . every country live with like such situation that will destroy the live not just sport now tell me what happen in GREAT BRITAIN when was Nazi air forces (air planes) was attack every city on G.B ?!!! are the ppl was play soccer there ?!!! just play not be a Champ in any tournament ?!!! (I was read the history very well on my study and read a lot of books about Europe history so I knew about ur history more than u my friend)
so u can compare between these. and u will know the type of Iraqi ppl . they are great not like any nation.
1 – 1980 – 1988 (Iraq – Iran war) support by western Capitalist to destroy 2 biggest countries and richest in Middle East (u must know why they support this idiot war and support the Criminal Dictator Saddam Hussein especially was support from USA and ur country England or G.B) and when the Criminal Saddam attack Iraqi Kurdish ppl in north of Iraq in 1988 by chemical weapons . USA & G.B was knew the truth but they didn’t make anything (so what about Human Rights here.. etc.. !!!).
2 – 1990 – 2003 the cruel blockade against Iraq after the Dictator Saddam Occuped the small Arabian Country (Kuwait). This Criminal Blockade destroy the Iraq as a country as a society etc… and make Iraqi ppl very poor they was (some poor ppl) died cuz they can’t find enough food or medicine u can google about this Criminal Blockade (more than 1700.000 Iraqi ppl was die .. women . children and old ppl) but Saddam and his family was live as any emperor in Middle ages he was build the palace one by one (ask the USA and English soldiers – who live now in these palaces) what the hell money are spend to build these palaces while the Iraqi was dying cuz they can’t find the food or medicine . so USA . G.B support this Dictator again by this Criminal idiot Blockade.
3 – 1991 – USA and other Armies destroy Iraq (not just Iraqi Army to make Kuwait liberator) no they destroy Baghdad (I was in Baghdad it was like hell cuz of bombs) and every city – especially the electricity and water and every thing was give service to ppl and the dictator and his family was live on them palaces. Iraq are suffer until now (after more than 4 years since war March/April 2003) no electricity no water the terrorist rules now in Iraq.
4 – the war of March/ April 2003 another destroy to everything since that war everything gonna worst believe me. I was very happy when Saddam defeated but we was also knew that USA & G.B comes here not 4 Human right .. BLAH BLAH BLAH… u know why they here ?!!!

3 – Iraqi players are World-Class players – they better than almost of some players who play in EPL & LA LIGA & Serie A & etc.. and the Iraqi players refused to play in EPL . Germany League & French League.. etc.. u can google about them but all these champs are professionals and play out of Iraq they beat Brazilian and other players on some other Leagues (like Qatar. Saudi . UAE. Cyprus etc..)
4 – these players are almost same players who won the Youth Asian Cup (host in Iran) in 2000 when Iraq beat Japan 2 – 1 and the Iraqi striker (Emad Mohammed was the Top scorer) (by the way Iraq was beat Japan in very easy but u know the wars see the history of the matches between these 2 countries)
5 – almost these same players who have 4th place in Olympic Games in Athens 2004 after defeated by Italy 0 – 1 but Iraq was much better than Italy and missed more than 4 real goals but Gilardino make the only 1 chance .. goal 4 Italy . (Asian teams never have 4th place before).

2. More teams with a chance to win the asian cup is great. (even if teams like Iraq embarrass my team Australia)
Better competition in Asia with better coaches and stronger teams will means a stronger world football. Asia needs several strong teams to increase the level of strong competition and hence the teams. It does not need a very small group of dominant teams but a large group of them.
All teams suffer a slide after such a high peak – no team can maintain such a high level for too long unless they have the depth of Brazil. I see a shift in Asian team dominance between several teams as we develop.
Changes in coaches and managers are even more critical to asian teams who’s players are not as experienced as other country’s players

I think its great that Iraq won the cup, not just because I’m from Iraq, but because this is something the people needed through everything thats happening to them. It was an unprecedented event in modern Iraqi history in my opinion, where everybody could finally agree on something, come together and celebrate. Unfortunately there were terrorists who used this to their advantage and killed dozens of innocent Iraqis.
As far as the future of the team is concerned, I believe they have a bright future ahead of them. They’re ripe with young talent and some of them have already received offers from European clubs. I think they showed they were the dominant team in the Asian Cup, and that paid off when they lifted the cup. I don’t think this was a one time thing, because if you remember the Olympics in 2004, they beat Costa Rica, Portugal and Australia before they barely lost to Italy 1-0. They came in 4th in that competition competing with world class teams.
