Q : Do sattelite recievers/decoders in another continent work in the UK?

The reason I ask is that in some countries you can pay about £5 a month for channels such as BBC, CNN, HBO< Star sports and movies, ESPN (for football) and more.
I was wondering if I subscribed and paid overseas and brought the reciever here etc would it work, or would the signals be out of reach. Any help would be appreciated.
PS I know I am being cheap,

There are many options for receiving foreign satellite TV. in UK. Some channels are totally free, some are not. There are different satellites to aim your dish at, but there are different coding systems for different broadcasters. Some codes are built-in, otherwise, an appropriate card called a “CAM” is needed. So, you need to establish what you want to view, before you choose a suitable digibox. Some satellites would need a bigger dish(from 60cms.diameter, up to 1.2 metres!) Generally speaking, you can buy all the equipment in the UK from about £100,(from Maplins – d.i.y.) and upwards, for more versatile equipment. Many pay channels are supposed to be for domestic markets only, due to copyrights, but there are ways of getting round it!
